Black People Get Therapy Too!
You’re not crazy. You’re not weak. You are human! It’s ok to be anxious, fearful, and have self doubt. It’s all a human emotion to your societal environment. But it is also ok to get the help if you are unable to pull yourself out of that negative space.
If you are a good grown age like myself , you haven’t heard therapy in your homes in a positive light and may even heard it a derogatory nature. But lets debunk that myth right here. Black people get therapy too. In fact, giving our systemic social disadvantages maybe we can contribute from the therapy even more than any other race.
Am I Depressed And Don’t Know It?!
Last month, I honestly was in pretty stagnated mindset. This resulted in feelings of hopelessness and dare I say it a bit depressed.
Coming from an educational trained social work background, I was never in he mindset that therapy was useless. Rather, having the knowledgeable skillset, to know how beneficial therapy can be to moving past obstacles to unlocking your better self.
And yet and still I also grappled with prioritizing self care through therapy first. Thinking to myself I know the coping mechanisms to push through. But quite frank y’all, sometimes you just need an unjudgmental perspective.
Therapy should be used for the highs and the lows in your life. A way to recognize the things that make you feel fulfilled and those that contribute to your sadness. And identifying those things to attempt to increase the good and minimize the bad.
Recent, I felt pretty low and I reached out to a friend, that I trust to give me good advice but also would be very curt with me(with care) to chat. In a kind way he said here’s a number to a good therapist. No judgement, no discussion, just genuine care, and help.
Black people need therapy too. Remember your friends aren’t shrinks, your social platform does not take your health insurance and shouldn’t be a way to air out all your feelings(some on occasion is ok); and there is no embarrassment in speaking with a certified clinician.
